You can find 9x12 and 10x14 pretty easily on overstock and rugsusa -- will probably cost you about $500-$600 which is not bad considering Pottery Barn will charge you $1500 for a crappy hand tufted rug that will shed for six months. I bought an 8x10 hand loomed wool rug that barely sheds for less than $300, the 9x12 version was $350.

Bound carpet. Much more affordable.

Just have to add that we were in a similar situation last year and ended up buying a large wool rug from One Kings Lane. As soon as I unrolled it, I could smell significant mold/mildew. Eventually I managed to get it out with daily baking soda vacuuming and bright sunlight, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone. And after all that, I learned that a close friend in another state also ordered a wool rug from OKL and hers had visible black mold on it. Clearly they have a storage problem.

I prefer just having the front ends of the furniture on the rug. And to 15:49, I think I would go with blueish tones.

Here's a 12x15 that is only about 650 after the discount.
Also - if you had pale yellow walls, white wood trim and cherry furniture in that dining room. What kind of rug would you get?

The 14x13 room is a living room. Still think an 8x10 would work? I want to make sure the table and chairs are all on the rug. An oval table that seats 6 without the leaf in it.

I think you can get good ones for about $300 for an 8x10. Larger is just more unusual. I would go down to an 8x10 before I got a crappy one.

What about getting a piece of carpet bound?

Overstock, RugsUSA, IKEA, Wayfair all offer a wide range of prices in a corresponding wide range of quality.
Do you actually want rugs the size of your room? You only need a rug that will contain your whole living space, and it looks better if there's some wood or tile showing. I would think you could probably go with 9x12 rugs for both of those, but it depends on what is on/around the rug (beds, sofas/chairs, dining table?).

Is there such a thing as an area rug that is pretty/nice quality and doesn't break the bank?
I have two rooms with hardwoods that need rugs - one is 14x13 and the other 20x13. All the rugs I see online are $1k each for this size.
Just bite the bullet and spend that much? Other option?
