I've taught in a different dept at both schools and I was more impressed across the board by Mason students. UVa students are lovely and ambitious, but in a bubble. Many go on to do great things, but those that do go next to grad school. Whereas I saw Mason students prepping for work lives right after a BA/BS. They were just more practical and driven--fewer expectations that life would be easy.

Any other option? I wouldn't pick either for CS.

GMU for that reason and only that reason GMU is not the same school it was 10-15-20 years ago. Much like MD used to be a commuter school, things change and speaking of change, I wonder if uva is going to be able to maintain their old reputation. they have had some many negative headlines the past few years starting with the president's issues.

Which one will you choose?

Does your DC want to stay in NoVa for the rest of his or her life?

I would go with GMU for computer science. The connections they have in this area for job placement are beyond comparison.

I work in the GMU incubator complex. Not a GMU student. But I will tell you that GMU Computer Science is an exceptional program and very competitive. If your child is serious, ask to see job placement statistics from UVA and GMU in this major. You will be amazed.

My son is in it. Fantastic. And they are committed to working with local industry to help your kid get a job. Hope it remains a sleeper school!!

UVA... VTech or UMD if it's on your DC's list.
