They don't sell hollow dowel rods at Home Depot. They sell solid wood dowel rods in 4 foot lengths that you can join (use double ended drapery specific screws) to make it curtain width.
They also sell regular metal curtain rods that are hollow, and also metal closet rods that are hollow. You can borrow a hacksaw off the shelf at Home Depot to cut it in store or just buy the hacksaw and cut it at home. Hacksaw should be $10-15. If you are a woman and persuasive (persistently annoying / older / cute / flirty / younger / combination thereof) and go on a less busy period (midday, midweek - avoid weekend warriors and morning rush from the trades) then you should easily be able to get help from the mostly male staff.
