I wouldn't worry too much, Sometimes kids end up with different names than you plan on. (Fwiw my Teddy had two friends named Theodore, one called Theo, one called Dore) there are two other Teddys at the neighborhood park, they're everywhere!

Dore? Like door?

In my family it's so normal to do this. There are so many Peters, Joes, Marias, Marys and Sarahs, including my own kids. And, like others have said, many people have cousins with the same name.

How old is your son? It'll be much weirder on her (when people meet them both etc) since you obviously did it first.

If I were you, I would say: "Teddy can't wait for his new cousin Teddy!!!" I think its weird and I'm not a fan, but hopefully she'll come around.

Everyone calls him Teddy. SIL I get along fine. We text regularly and grab coffee or dinner once every 3-4 months or so. Now, MIL and I, that's a different story...

It's totally annoying but there's not much you can do.

One of my friends growing up has a first cousin with the same (unusual in this country Italian) name. They lived in neighboring towns and were together pretty much every weekend. They were very close and LOVED that they shared a name.

Also, they actually have different names and at some point they'll probably change what nicknames they want to go by. You may well be making a fuss over something that won't be an issue in a few years.

I think it's cute to have two little guys named Teddy! Play it up -- give them matching Teddy bears. No reason not to.

Ugh. Sorry, OP. She sounds like a pain in the ass.

I have a good friend Sarah who has a first cousin who is also Sarah. Not a huge deal in real life.

Maybe Teddy has always been her favorite name? Should she not get to use it?

Don't worry about it - it will be fine.

I'd be annoyed too. Do you and your SIL usually get along?

You know, let it go. It's a little weird to me, but there are many, many families where there are lots of cousins with the same name.

Does your SIL and the rest of your family call your DS Teddy?

DS is named after his grandfathers: Thomas Edward D****. We call him Teddy because my late father (Edward) went by Ted and his initials are TED and since DH and his father are Tom and Thomas. SIL (DH's sister) is having a baby boy due this summer and just announced that she is naming him Theodore (not a family name on either side) and plans on calling him Teddy. MIL, who for once seems to be on "our" side, pointed out that Theo is a cute nickname for Theodore, but is pretty against SIL using it. DS and his cousin will be growing up together in close proximity. We all live in the area and see each other almost weekly. I haven't said anything (other than to DH), but I'm just ridiculously annoyed by it all. I guess I'm not really looking for any advice, just wanted to vent!
