We got a dark leather (probably "leather") ottoman for use as a coffee table, and it has been extremely kid-friendly. My main goal was to have something that wouldn't hurt her if she fell on a corner, and it's been great for that. Plus it's good for putting feet on. I had to stop drinking my wine out of wine glasses, though, and switched to on-the-rocks glasses - they're more stable because the surface isn't as stable.

I have a large leather ottoman with storage inside. It has nice a nice nailhead trim around the bottom. Got it at Ross for around $100.

We got a couch and matching storage ottoman set made of microfiber. Microfiber makes for easy cleanup and is durable for jumpy kids.

We got 2 faux leather ottomans from Target that have held up very well. However, we don't eat in the living room, so probably treat ours better than you would.

We did a pleather ottoman. Loved it and it lasted for years, cleaned up easily and was so comfy for putting feet up on and for eating at. There are cheap ones that are going to look about as cheap as a similarly priced coffee table ($300 coffee tables look like junk after a year). Or you can go more expensive with leather and it won't look cheap. LIke another poster, we used trays for eating. We got some plastic tray-like things that were almost like chargers. 14 inch square so one for each person. We loved that ottoman. Alas 10 years of cat scratching left it in sorry shape, and now our minimalist interior doesn't really suit another one.

We have a leather ottoman that is starting to show its age. I was quoted $150 by several different local reupholstery places to manufacture a slipcover for it. Inexpensive way to extend its life.

I got a big storage ottoman from IKEA that has removable/washable covers. It's durable and cheap, a good alternative until we can reintroduce glass coffee tables.

We got rid of our glass table and replaced it with a big leather ottoman. We put a nice (but kid friendly) tray on top. The kids can safely climb on the ottoman and the leather cleans surprisingly easily. In a few years we may go for a real coffee table again but this set up is working really well for now.

I have an ottoman coffee table and I love it.

That being said, it's not kid friendly. My friends kids were over last weekend and they wallowed it up. It's not washable. They were also changing dirty diapers on it! (wtf). You couldn't eat on it either because if you spill, you can't wash it.

We love it for putting our feet up though! We don't wear shoes inside.

I have a glass coffee table and would like to find a more kid-friendly coffee table. I would like the table to be comfortable to kick up your feet onto, and also one we can eat on (I often watch tv or play with the baby while eating off of the coffee table).

I am considering an ottoman coffee table, such as the tufted ottoman from west elm or a similar one from room and board (http://www.westelm.com/products/tufted-dining-bench-flax-h655/?pkey=cottomans%7C%7C&cm_src=ottomans||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_--_-). I think it would be kid friendly, but I am concerned that any crumbs would really stain the ottoman or get into the tufted parts.

What do folks recommend for a kid-friendly coffee table, that you can kick your feet onto, and also eat on? Would an ottoman/coffee table work?
