Sometimes it's hard to get parents to attend. Sounds like you want to be an involved parent and you need to know whether the school is welcoming of that or not. Anyway, what could it hurt?

HOw do you choose a school? You're assigned to one.

I think she means that she chose her home based on the school it is assigned.

This is OP. I called the school- they no longer HAVE an active PTA! I was really disappointed. It is a Title I school and they have a dedicated "Parent Liason." Since I don't even have kids in the school yet, I figured there's nothing I can do about it. What a bad sign! And despite this, the school's test scores have improved and it is now a 7/10 on Greatschools.

Definitely talk to the school and find out about the PTA. Its quite common at my DDs' school (Hyattsville Elementary) for parents of four-year-olds to attend PTA meetings and to get involved early. We appreciate it and encourage it.

My daughter is almost 4 and I am beginning to consider our school options. I tried to attend a PTA meeting at our local elementary, and the meeting times were posted online, but no one was at the school when I got there. Is attending the PTA meeting before my daughter is in school too much? I thought it was a nice way to get involved in our community. Should I try to contact the school to find out what is going on with the PTA? I don't feel like this is a good omen.
