ps. a hand tufted rug is going to shed. A lot. For months. And months. And months. I have one I bought in Nov that is still shedding.

I have one that is hand hooked, which is similar to looped and it's fine but I definitely wouldn't buy it if you have pets. Claws would probably destroy that thing.

The best are usually hand-KNOTTED.

Try a water hog mat which has unique rubber-reinforced face nubs keeping the pile from being compressed over time, allowing for extended product life. If you want you can get a good quality of floor mat in different style and material at floormatsystems.

Our loops are quite short. We don't get snags from the dog just walking on it, but for some reasons the looped rugs seem to make her want to nest, so she scratches at a spot. She doesn't do that on other rugs.

I have two new rugs - one of each, and one very old hand hooked rug (similar to looped). The old one has held up incredibly well -- it's at the point where you can't see the loops b/c they are tamped down so much. The main difference between the new hand tufted vs hooked rugs are (a) SHEDDING -- the tufted one is still shedding 6 months after we bought it, the hooked one shed minimally for about a month and (b) PLUSHNESS - the tufted one is definitely more plush, but I am so glad it's not in our main living area b/c every time we play on the hand tufted rug, my little one and I are COVERED in rug fibers. I hate it. But it is really soft and plush. So I'm torn about which one I would recommend -- I guess it mostly depends on if you think you can handle the shedding or not. The hooked one (the new one) does have a few snags, but it's not noticeable to anyone but me.

Tufted = a cut pile, like grass. Does not snag.

Looped = a loop pile, like Berber carpet, or the eye of a needle. Will snag.

Flat woven is flat like a mat or clothing.

Yes, looped. It is a type of carpet construction. Yarns are looped into the carpet foundation but then not sheared off at the top as they would be in a tufted construction.

Are you sure it says hand-looped, not hand-loomed?

I found a wool area rug I really like a lot. It is hand-looped rather than hand-tufted. Does anyone have experience with hand-looped rugs? Do the loops tend to get snagged? We don't have a cat, but we do have a dog that will occasionally get excited and run around, scratch her back on the rug, etc. We've never had an issue with our current hand-tufted rug, but I'm not sure about the loops.
