Ditto! My child was JUST diagnosed (in 3rd grade) and I'm reading the thread in this forum that talks about "What I wished I'd known"--I just thought repetition and practice would be key to learning. No, no, no. The teachers aren't trained to deal with dyslexia--WHY? The treatments are well-known and tested. Oh, well, I love a good fight, but I don't want to get on the wrong side of the special-ed teacher, who is short-tempered enough as it is.

Thanks, PP! Having the word "dyslexia" has been tremendously helpful for me as a parent. It allows me to search for books, resources, and even look at history to understand what to do for my child. I have been flabbergasted by how little teachers know about specific treatment for dyslexia, and how little of the teaching curricula - even reading remediation! - is evidence based.

Maryland is one of a handful of states that does not recognize dyslexia as a separate reading/language disability requiring specific techniques. Tomorrow, people will head to the Maryland State legislature in Annapolis and hope to raise the consciousness here. I can't believe that in 2015 my daughter is simply being told, "Focus! Focus!" That's the learning technique. Learned Level Intervention (LLI) is often contra-indicated for dyslexics. More here:
