We had to have our garden window replaced/rebuilt. (The original was rotting off the house.) Thompson Creek did a fabulous job. We already had a hole in our wall, obviously, but it's a rather large window and cost $4K, if I remember correctly.

OP. it depends on where the window faces. If you get light from the south then it would work. I had one and never used it. Hard to reach.

Oooh I like both of those options. Yes, I wonder what it will look like from the outside. I'm sure there is something that can be done to make it work with the house. Maybe I can do some higher bushes/plants in front of the kitchen so the window is framed a little by the landscaping. Do you think this is something my husband can do or should I find a contractor? He is pretty handy, but hasn't done windows before. I don't want to ask him until I know it's ok because he will get all excited, and he already has a lot going on.

This one has a glass top, kinda ugly from the outside I bet, but functional.

Love that kitchen. I have that window. I suppose I could grow herbs up there but it seems so messy and cluttery and I'm not exactly known for keeping green things alive. I will need to explore this further....

Does anyone have experience doing this? I would like to have a small area above the sink for an herb garden. I've only seen this done once and fell in love with the idea. Is this something that makes sense? And what kid of cost am I looking at?
