Many of the books build on characters and events in previous books, and the PP who recommended the later books as being superior to The Color of Magic and the very early Discworld books is probably correct.

Some of the ones that can stand relatively alone are: (other Discworld fans please chime in as well, as I'm doing this off the top of my head) -

Small Gods
Guards, Guards
Pyramids
Moving Pictures
The Truth
Jingo
Soul Music

All of those are early enough or introduce new characters/regions of the Discworld that they don't rely too heavily on the rest of the series.

I realized that I've read more Neil Gamain than Terry Pratchett though I loved Good Omens.

I am so sad about his passing. I have made a plan to re-read the entire series (I missed a few here and there) from beginning to end this year. Don't know if I'll make it but I'll sure have fun trying.

To those who only have read Color of Magic - while good genre lit, it cannot compare to his later works that sing and earned him his knighthood. The satire is biting, but the emotion is true.

My heart broke when I read the news in WaPo. I have been a big fan since a long time. I wonder if he went as he wanted to? Swallowing the drug cocktail with his favorite brandy, sitting in his chair on his front lawn, not letting Alzheimer's claim him.

I just read the Color of Magic and really enjoyed it. At least he left us many, many books.

OP here. I just realized I spelled his name wrong. And I call myself a fan! I'm sorry, Sir Pratchett!

He has so many books so it looks daunting at first, but you can pick up any of them and be fine. If you don't have time to read anything right now, I really recommend watching both The Color of Magic and The Hogfather (available on Netflix DVD). They're really good adaptations of two of Pratchett's best books and perfectly capture the humor of his writing.

Multiple friends of mine on FB posted about his passing, and I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar with his work. If I ever read for pleasure again (once the kids are older!) I'll have to check his stuff out. The people who knew of him seemed to really love him.

I'm surprised that there hasn't yet been a thread on this! Author of the Discworld series, Terry Prachett died today after a long battle with Alzheimer's. His books have meant so much to me; he's given me my type of sense of humor and has introduced me to a love of fantasy.

Some of my favorite quotes that seem appropriate today:
