Good for them! I homeschooled my kids in the early years. They got a lot out of it. I transitioned them to regular school when we moved into a much better school district. If you are not happy with the schools and private is out of reach, snobby or a plain hassle, why not?

Teacher's don't know how to handle black boys...what rubbish is this? Then when a school is proposed to help/enroll black boys it is frowned upon. What is it? The issue is not the children...the adults in this situation are the blame to the core. No one has an excuse in this situation but more dialogue...no more explanations are needed.

I would love to home school my children and agree with most of what was written in the article and am not surprised by the anecdotes, as I have AA friends who gripe about the same thing, esp. the treatment of AA boys in both private and public.

I don't, however, have the temperament nor do I have the income to home school and not work. I know a number of home school moms and they are fabulous women.

The article does speak to the family's experience at Stokes, however, the gist of what was being said was that African American boys have a tougher time in the public school system because many times teachers do not know how to handle their energy level. The parent's used their experience at Stokes as an example.

Seems they had a good experience in kindergarten at Stokes many years ago and a not good first grade experience. Probably several years ago when Stokes was in NW and started with K.

Not African-American, but know some folks whose children go to Stokes, and a couple of people who work at Stokes. I found the comments about Stokes being "insensitive" to African-American children" to not match with what I have heard about the school. The school leadership is predominantly African-American, as is half the student body. But that was obviously their perception, from their vantage. My guess is that others wouldn't agree.

I thought the City Paper article was really interesting.
