Check out Jerome, AZ. It is a pretty cool town not far from Sedona. There's also some really cool state park we went to - you MUST go there - Slide Rock State Park. There are a bunch of national monuments in the area as well and all were pretty cool. I think you will find plenty to do in Sedona when you are there.

Just went there last fall. Lots of great hiking in sedona for all levels. Cathedral rock is nice because it has some shaded parts by a small river so its relief from the sun. There is a visitor center you should stop into for trail maps. they also tell you if there have been any bear sitings... The town of sedona is touristy, think t shirt/crystal shops. There are jeep tours which might be fun. You should definitely go the grand canyon, its the best reason to go to AZ. In general I think Phoenix completely sucks. Except for In and Out burger, thats worth the shitty crap sprawl....

Agree on the zoo - Phoenix also has a fantastic desert botanical garden that is worth checking out. DH and i went before we had kids but my cousins (they live there and we were visiting them) had little ones and they also loved it. And Sedona is beautiful, with lots of local hiking opportunities, etc. FWIW since you think you'll be able to return, I'd recommend concentrating on enjoying Phoenix and Sedona and not try to also squeeze in the Grand Canyon on this visit but save it for its own. I really think you'll find plenty to do already in those two places as it is, so why waste the extra time in the car, especially with little ones. Plus the traffic IN the park can be brutal, so as a day trip you may not make it in much farther than the entrance. Anyway whatever you do, it's a cool part of the country, have a great time!

Phoenix has a nice zoo. You could also do a hot air balloon ride. There's also a children's museum (or at least there was about 4 years ago when we were there), and your kids would probably like it - our DD was 6 when we went, and she had a blast.

You might like a jeep tour in Sedona. Also great hiking for all levels. That being said if you have time, a day trip to GC is well worth it.

Sedona has a lot of great things to do. Red Rock State Park is amazing for hiking and views (especially Eagle Nest Trail) and it also has an education center and a hummingbird garden. Cathedral Rock is especially nice at sunset. There is also a really neat chapel built into the side of the rocks (Chapel of the Holy Cross). Tlaquepaque Village has a lot of cool stores, restaurants, and art sculptures. A day trip from the Grand Canyon may be doable depending on how your kids do on car trips, as it is 2 hours in each direction from Sedona. However, it is an easy 2 hours due to high speed limits (75 mph!)and little to no traffic on the roads. I also recommend that you leave Sedona for the Grand Canyon very early in the morning to beat crowds if you choose to go.

Hi. We are travelling to Pheonix/Sedona with 3 boys ages 8, 6 and 6. We are set with accommodations but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for places to eat or things to do? We'd like to do at least a couple of hikes - any suggestions? Is a day trip to the Grand Canyon a must or is there enough to do in Sedona itself (we do plan to return to the area so this would not be our only chance to visit the Grand Canyon). We'd also like to find a place that would guide us on some outdoor rock climbing. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions.
