Emailed last night:

To the PGCPS Community:

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) has decided to convert April 2, 2015 into an instructional day with a two-hour early dismissal for students. Spring break remains April 3-10 for students and teachers.

Seven days of school have been missed this year by PGCPS students due to inclement weather. The PGCPS school calendar for 2014-2015 includes plans for four inclement weather make-up days on June 18, 19, 22, and 23, 2015.

To address the additional inclement weather closures beyond the build and possible addition of three inclement weather make-up days, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell requested a two-day waiver for PGCPS from the Maryland State Board of Education. Once a decision is rendered a new update will be announced on the entire inclement weather calendar adjustment plan.
PGCPS understands school delays or closures greatly impact students, families, and staff. When making decisions to close or delay schools, the district’s key focus is on the safety of students and staff. We appreciate your patience during this time.

I think the year will definitely be extended. The question is will spring break also be shortened?

I hope they cut scheduled days off and do not extend the school year. My private school kids will get out June 5th. My poor child in PGCPS already has 2 additional weeks. Let's not make it 3.

There are no built in days in PG county. We just got an email today stating that we had to make up 7 snow days which means the new last day of school would be June 26th for students. The county plans to file with the state for a waiver to waive some of the days. We as educators also filled out a survey stating how we would like to make up the days from changing April 2nd to a day of school. April 2nd right now is a grading/planning day for teachers. Also the survey asked if we would be willing to take 2 days off of our spring break. As of right now there is no plan in regards to the snow days. It's pretty much up in the air.

It is my understanding that there are snow days that are built in the school year. Every day they are out doesn't mean an extra day unless the days off exceed the built in snow days. Apparently that has happened but it looks like it is only 1-2 days over including today.

I think that the "built in" days are those that are noted on the school system's calendar as inclement weather make-up days after the original last day of school (June 17th). So the extra days are June 18th-19th and 22nd-23rd. I guess they will be going until the 23rd now?

The media keeps saying that PGCPS had one snow day left until the one last week, but I didn't think there were any "built in" to the schedule. I thought that for every day closed, the schedule extended further into June. The original last day was the 19th, I think. Is it now the 26th?
