Penalty for filing late is much greater than the penalty for paying late. Whatever you do, file your return or extension on time. Penalty for paying late is 0.5% of tax owed, per month. So if you owe $1000 and pay 5 months late, your penalty will be $25 (plus interest). By contrast, the penalty for [i]filing[i] late is 5% per month.

If you mail the check on 4/15, I would get a receipt or confirmation that it was mailed on that date just to be safe.

Mail it on the 15th. As long as it's postmarked the 15th it is not considered late. It will take another 2-3 to get there and maybe a week before they process it. Don't count count on that but that has been my experience in the past.

Even if you file for an extension, you still have to pay what you owe by April 15 or you'll face fines/penalties.
