"Grandbaby" annoys me, but I used the term "baby."

I love it! We're going to have the first grandbaby on either side and every time I hear the word I think of the joy it will bring to our parents

I'm the OP. This isn't a spin-off thread of anything. I just see and hear the phrase often and it annoys me. Like the word "moist" bugs some people or "literally" used figuratively. People have word hang ups, this is mind. I wondered if I was alone. Obviously not.

Is this a spin-off of the thread about how OP couldn't bear the expression "screen time"?
Really, why are people so invested in mere words?
It's not derogatory or incorrect. Move on.

We still call our toddler the baby. It makes me want to punch my MIL in the face when she calls him her baby, though. Her "grandbaby" would be annoying but not rage inducing.

So did we, and after the second was born, she became, and remains at 3.5, "the baby."
Grandbaby doesn't bother me at all.

I'd rather hear grandbaby than my mom's term, "the grands."
Here's a picture of our grands.
The grands are coming over today!
Ugh. Grands are biscuits.
why can't the sex be specified? If the baby has yet to be born and you don't know the sex, grandbaby is fine. Once the baby is born, it should revert to granddaughter or grandson.

I have no problem with grandbaby, and yes I called my son the baby quite a bit when he was a baby. What I don't like is when MIL calls and asks how her baby is doing, but I just let it slide.

I don't like Grandbaby either but I did use the term baby regularly.

We used "the baby" to each other pretty much all the time until we had a second.

I told you it may be irrational. So at least I'm self-aware.

It's a little cutesy for me, but I don't mind it.
I'd say "the baby" when the baby was an infant sometimes.

Am I the only one whose teeth get set on edge by this term? "Granddaughter" "Grandson" or "Grandchild" are fine, even "Grandkid" but "Grandbaby" really, really annoys me for some reason. (Which I realize may be totally irrational, but there it is...)
If it doesn't annoy you, did you call your own child your "baby?" as in "Oh, I have to take my baby to the pediatrician tomorrow?" I wonder if that's why it sounds grating to me; because I never used "baby" only "son" and "daughter" or "kid"
