FWIW, there's no reason for a twin bed at age 3. You could wait another year, if you are still worried about falling out of bed.

OP. Thanks. That style seems perfect because of the guard rail. seems like IKEA doesn't have anything like that in twin size, only toddler.

My daughter fell out of her twin bed (not an ikea bed, but a low LL bean bed w/o box spring). She was newly 5, and wound up breaking her elbow. Apparently it is not at all uncommon, based on my conversations with the ER staff and pediatric orthopedist. So in my opinion, low is better! I'm now shopping for a twin bed for my younger child, and definitely looking. For low!

We just put one side against the wall and never had problems with her falling out. The guard rail was easy to take off when she was older.

Our crib is from IKEA, so I looked at their site for beds. I was just concerned he might fall out of their beds because the raised portion at the head looks pretty short, and it doesn't look like you can add a guard rail since you can only add one to the head.

He still moves around a lot in his converted crib (with one side taken down and guard rail up).
Do kids adjust to moving less when they get a twin bed?
Anyone have trouble with kids falling out of IKEA twin beds?
If you're worried about falling I'd put a mattress on the floor first, but it's a short distance either way.

We got a cheap-o twin mattress from Mattress Discounters. Maybe $300 all in.
A little firm, but fine for him and fine for us when we have to lay down with him.
No bed frame, just a cover and lots of blankets.
