I traveled overseas pre- 9/11 and most of the comments I received could be perceived as racist but were generally just curious...I had an old Italian lady tell me my skin was beautiful and she had never met a dark.

I have truly felt uncomfortable in parts of Western and Southern Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Challenges traveling overseas tend to have more to do with unaccepted nationalities than skin color, from my experience. People still assume that the Ugly American tourist is coming and I had the misfortune and embarrassment to see one up close. In France, an American "gentleman" demanded that he receive his change in American money and was frustrated because the cashier didn't understand English. Luckily, the guy's wife stepped in.

But you should note that the Australians did welcome them into the country, only to have their charity abused.

I'm black and have traveled to many of the mentioned countries with no problem. I find more racism right here in the USA than other places.

I am a dark brown minority and recently a fellow minority at work commented that he would not travel to certain places because of his skin color and how he would be treated. When I pressed him for places that he would avoid he said Hungary, Russia, Romania, maybe Greece and turkey. Is their anything valid to this? I haven't done extensive travelling and most of the places we have went was England, Italy and they were fine.
