She might be scared because she thinks she's losing a part of herself when she poops on the potty. Find a book that expains where poop comes from and where it's going.

Sometimes it can also be a need for control. In that case, you need to give control back to the child. There's a great story on youtube which does a great job teaching the child he's the one who decides when he lets his poop come out.

FYI, OP, when you're potty training, you don't "ask" if they need to go. That's part of the point of training. Just take her at regular intervals like every 2-3 hours. You praise for effort. Also, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Expect accidents.

Are you using a potty seat insert? An actual kids potty? Or a regular toilet?

I ask bc i found it made a big difference, or so it seemed, on the beginning when DD was getting used it.

Pooping seems to freak your Dd. If she can muster the courage to do it on the potty a few more times she won't freak out so much and find potty use easier.

My mom pulls that "You trained yourself" or "You never had tantrums" or the ever popular, "You weren't a picky eater" stuff on me all the time. Uh huh. Whatever.

My DD is not quite 2 1/2 yet and I'm nowhere close to where you are today. Hang in there!

Do you have potty books and videos to show her? My dd loved this one. I would continue on if I were you for a little while, but lower your expectations and don't pressure her too much. Try to make it fun. I called it propaganda because we watched so many potty videos and read so many potty books. My dd alas did not potty train until 3.5 though in spite all of my efforts.

Something that's helped us is wrapping up a surprise, leaving it in the bathroom, and saying she can open it when... whatever milestone you want--she poops once or keeps underwear dry all morning or whatever. Surprise can be something really cheap or something you were going to give her anyway.

First, I know you said it tongue-in-cheek, but she won't wear diapers forever. Have you ever seen a 5 year old in diapers? No. They all figure out sometime.

Secondly, you're doing the right things I think, just try not to put too much pressure. At that age, if you push push push she will buck it. My 3 yo son is still working on it. He totally has control over peeing and pooping, and will pee on the potty when guided that way, but refuses to poop on the potty and even with pee won't say hey I need to potty! unless asked and sometimes dragged into the bathroom.

If and when we try to continually push the poop aspect, he is less inclined to go in there at all, even though he is comfortable peeing on the potty.

Stick with it! We read that "do it in a weekend, hooray!" book, and we thought that would be it. Alas, a few months later our son was finally potty trained. Your munchkin will get there - you will survive. You can do this! I love the diaper fairy idea.

First of all, at that age it can go easily or it can be a process. Have low expectations and know that it may not work right away. Heck, my 4 year old has occasional accidents.

it's the first day. relax, keep going for 3 days and see. if you put too much pressure on her, she is not going to do it, so relax and chill out. the fact that you told the world is irrelevant but if you let that get in your head, you'll put way to much pressure on her and it isn't going to work. she has to want to do it - you can't make her.

DD is 2.5 (3 in July). She 100% understands the potty and has for some time, but she got freaked out about 6 months ago when she pooped on it and surprised herself. since then, I've been waiting for her to come around and it hasn't happened, but she shows every other sign of readiness so I decided to bite the bullet.

In short, today blows.

Started off awesome, she tinkled first thing and was super proud of herself. Then, I think she felt like she needed to poop while she was on the toilet and she FLIPPED. Doesn't want to go on it, has had 2 poop and 2 pee accidents, all immediately after I've either taken her to the potty or asked her if she needed to go. We are doing underwear while awake and pullups for sleep, the "Diaper Fairy" came last night and took all the diapers.

We have made the biggest f'ing deal of this - told all her preschool teachers, family, etc - so I don't think we can back out (plus, I think she would cheerfully wear dipes forever) but I am so discouraged. Just venting, but can someone make me feel better? My mom said "Oh, you trained yourself," and most of my friends have said "no big deal!"
