There are so many shows now that are "Mini Series" with a run of eight episodes or so and movie actors appear in those shows. The whole industry has changed.

I used to love Saturday nights as a kid because it was "The Love Boat" night! We only had one T.V. and my parents and I could watch that show together...One of the only shows that we all enjoyed + could watch as a family.

It used to be like a mini-vacation for me, I felt like I too was going on an hour long cruise. I wanted to be a cruise director just like Julie when I grew up and I swore my honeymoon would be on The Love Boat!!

Eight is Enough was a great show as well. Ralph Macchio was so cute, he became my first celebrity crush on that show. I loved the family dynamic on that show and the Father, Dick van Patton was so sweet and loving.

Lots of sitcoms have guest stars. The Mindy Project alawys has some star coming in for an episode or two (Seth Rogan, Chloe Sevigny, James Franco, Jenna Elfman, BJ Novak, etc). Brooklyn 99 gets some good ones too.

That was some bad tv op. There is a reason we no longer have that crap. Asy dad used to say "It's popcorn for the brain".

The only show I can think of is SNL, but the special guest is the host. Hmmm...can't think of one.

Oh, how I hated that show. The kids I babysat for were enamored with that show. My sister's favorite shows were Fantasy Island and Eight is Enough, which I also disliked. I'm terribly nostalgic for the "olden days," so I might enjoy them at long last.

Waiting at home for a repairmen and only half working with the TV on and found a channel showing back to back Love Boats. The one on right right is Billy Crystal as the kissing bandit, which was a season 1 episode. Other guest stars include Nancy Kulp (the assistant from the Beverly Hillbillies), Robert Reed (Brady Bunch), Toni Tenille, one of the daughters from 8 is Enough, Marilyn McCoo, Todd Bridges, and a few other random people.

It's making me think of the other late 70s/early 80s shows - I feel like there were lots of shows that randomly grouped celebrities, like Fantasy Island. Or other entertainment shows like Battle of the Network Stars.

What's our modern equivalent? I suppose Law & Order is famous for its guest stars, but I can't think of anything else that assembles ensemble casts.

I know they were cheesy as hell, but what's our celebrity outlet now? One theory might be that celebrities used to have private lives and we could get a sense of them from their guest spots, and that today we get our fill from celebrity red carpets and celebrity fashion websites, or gossip sites that report on celebrities.

Is this just nostalgia on my part, or is it time for cheesy celebrity ensemble shows to make a comeback?
