Oh, you're one of those parents. You'll probably make your kid wait until 7th grade to have a phone, won't you?

I hope this is sarcasm. Do you honestly think 7th graders should all have phones? That is sad

Yes it's sad, they should've had them in 3rd grade

We are in a lot of activities. As soon as they are drop off, my child will have a cheap kids phone for emergencies. I don't see the issue when they are inexpensive and have a tracker so we know exactly where they (or at least the phone) is and if they need me, can easily call. If cheap phones were available, my parents would have gotten us them to keep track of us.

The age of helicopters and over-undulgence = spoiled kids with zero common sense.

My kid is 12 and all his friends have pads and laptops. It is hard to share computers when the older kids all need them for HW and mom and dad have work to do as well. The cost of laptops and pads are much lower than they used to be especially if you don't buy Apple stuff.

More like 18 when they can afford the phone and pay for the plan themselves...

I don't want my kids playing on my ipad. At 10 that seems normal. My kids are much younger and ALL their friends have ipads!!!

He will be playing Minecraft, Angry Birds, etc, using Google, watching some Amazon videos, and maybe using as an eReader eventually. Right now he uses my iPad to do all that.
Considering a Kindle Fire or an iPad mini. Any suggestions on which way to go?
Thanks.

My 6 and 8 year olds have ipads. They earn the right to use them for 2 hours during the weekend if they behave well during the week and do their chores. If you are an apple family, I would go with that.

Because the parents don't want to share? What is the big deal just because your child or his friends don't have tablets. We have one for each member of the family. We got them all as gifts but we would have bought them. They are cheap enough now.

iPad mini. The 2 is almost the same as the 3 and will save you some $$ with the same processor. Check microcenter - staples will price match them and others if it isn't convenient
