Please call the store. It's likely something came ashore with the bananas (perhaps as innocuous as flies or something) and they will want to know so they can trace it.

OP again. Well, I lived though the night. The bananas were not organic, just a regular yellow-green bunch. Unlike most of you, I have to work today but will try to call the store. It seems to be an over-reaction to do much more at this point.

In addition to those horror movie spiders, Googling shows that most bananas are not exported from Brazil to the U.S. and that many other people are posting questions about their own banana freak shows...with few answers, but no other articles about home evacuations. And here I thought I was mainly going to have to worry about fruit flies.

I'm glad I read this post so I can check my bananas more thoroughly next time, but I'm also not glad I read this post. That photo of the tarantula-sized thing on the bananas is something I wish I hadn't seen.

Get the bananas and put them in bleach. You need to make sure you kill the baby spiders so they don't come out when the weather warms a little. Take pictures and call the grocery store where you got them from. There's probably other cocoons on other bunches.

Google says it could be deadly spiders. Go squash the cocoon before they come out and you have to evacuated your home.

I bought bananas at Harris Teeter yesterday. Today when I went to pull a couple out of the bunch, there was this freaky cocoon thing that was attached to the inner bananas in the bunch. It was light brown and kind of papery. I ate one banana and put the rest in the trash as I wasn't sure if bugs would hatch out of it. Anyone encounter something like this before?
