Subject: What do you think of when you see these schools names?
My DD is also applying to USC, Brown, UCLA, and others not on your list. I would be careful about listening to opinions denigrating schools. Do your own homework and a visit is worth it's weight in gold.
We visited USC (the neighborhood leaves much to be desired) but I liked the campus, liked the security, the weather is awesome, and the academics are superb.
Many people call USC the 'university of spoiled children' but you could say the same about HYP. You have the option to associate with spoiled children or you can move on and find your own niche. And that's anywhere you go.

Subject: What do you think of when you see these schools names?
What does your son like about these very different schools? Is there a program they all have that he is interested in? What is the thread that links all these schools in his mind?
I think you can help him find schools that are a good fit if you know what it is about these schools that he finds appealing.

All these schools have plenty of smart, hard-working kids, and are highly ranked. That said:
UNC--friendly, lots of school spirit, liberal, fairly laid back
UVA--preppy, work hard/play hard, fratty
NYU--very diverse, very urban, not a "rah-rah" type of environment at all. A very different campus experience compared to most of the others on this list.
UCLA--more laid-back than USC, diverse, very sports-focused
USC--fratty, wealthy, very Ocean City, pre-professional, very sports-focused
Vanderbilt--very Southern, preppy, wealthy, Greek
Brown--very laid-back & casual, quirkier, diverse, extremely liberal
Georgetown--no greek life, more intense
GW--honestly, this one is a big cipher to me.

UVA - same as UNC
NYU - overated so-so school. crazy to pay full tuition
UCLA - same as UNC

I think that some of these are wildly different schools. It's hard to think of Brown in the same sentence with UVA or Vanderbilt.

UNC -- Good school, easier for a kid from NoVa to get into b/c out-of-state tuition. BIG. Typical research university in that the undergraduate school is probably a bit overrated. Basketball.
UVA -- Hard for qualified NOVA kids to get into b/c quotas. Optimal. Public Ivy. Greek culture big-time.
NYU -- Depends on the program you want, but good school. Manhattan living. $$$$$.
UCLA -- Typical research university, only on the West Coast. Football.
USC -- Private school version of UCLA. Bad neighborhood in L.A. Football.
VANDERBILT -- SEC. Nashville. Good medical school, solid undergraduate. Private.
BROWN -- Ivy. Lacrosse. SLAC-like.
GEORGETOWN -- Across the river. Catholic. Basketball. $$.
GW -- Overrated. Most $$$$$$$ school in the nation.
