Parent of a 9th grader. Middle school homework was pretty minimal, < 1 hr/day with bumps for larger projects. Now DC has 2-3 hrs/day, but most of it gets done in free period or at school before/after ECs and coming home.

The juniors seem to be the ones who get really socked. The AP homework tends to be very high because the teachers don't want to spent classroom time teaching to the test, so the kids have to do it on their own.

For Upper School, even for the most organized kids who use their time efficiently, the answer can vary depending on the mix of courses and teachers for the year. Usually assigned homework is a range of time, say 30-60 minutes per class. So it could be anywhere from 1 1/2 - 5 hours, varying each day of week. Or, for the most rigorous of schedules and teachers, 5 hours every day which is still within guideline and expected for AP classes, some what mitigated with weekend work.

Different poster, my DD is in 8th at Holton and homework each night 2-3 hours. It usually depends on her schedule the next day and if she had a study hall to complete some of her work.

I take that back- in 7th & 8th they can get homework on Friday that is due Monday.

Yes, they do have a stated homework expectation. For 7th and 8th grade it is 2- 2 1/2 hours, Monday through Friday. No homework is assigned on Friday that is due on Monday, however there will be longer term projects and studying for quizzes/tests that may happen on weekends.

I'm also trying to decide how much stock to put in the answers that schools give to that question. Based on what you've said, my guess is I shouldn't put much.

You could ask 5 different parents at our school that question and get 5 different answers. It depends on the kids and their study habits. I've had some parents surprised that my middle schooler is done with homework by 8:30 (getting home at 6 (after sports), dinner, shower, homework). However there is no social media, study halls are used to study, time is spent on weekends working on stuff due during the week so that weeknights are things that are assigned and due next day. My child is very organized, but that's what allows them to play sports, have activities and get very good grades.

For folks who have children in local independent middle and high schools, can you tell me/us how many hours of homework your child generally has a night? (and the name of their school). I want to give my child a great education, but it seems to me that a lot of these schools really overload them with homework at the expense of family time.
