We love Lafayette. Our teachers have been wonderful, the class sizes are reasonable (true across DCPS) and we adore the community. I also really like the new principal who has been very responsive to issues.

I think the Hill is finally starting to appreciate LT. With the renovations, best-on-Hill test scores, new principal, excellent teachers, and strong/growing parent community, the fundamentals are strong (and actually have been strong for a few years now). I'm also an IB parent and I see no reason to leave the school in the coming years. I'm impressed with how the school supports and brings out the best in all kids, including those from low income or disadvantaged homes.

OP - Thanks posters at 11:27 & 12:45. I really like hearing good stories like this. And I'm especially happy to have heard one about Barnard, since that it also our IB school!

It's elementary school - what is there not to like. Small children playing with toys and hugging each other.

ECE is not the problem with DCPS, it's middle school where you have the issues.

When we moved to Petworth I visited a lot of charter schools and didn't think we'd go to Barnard, our nearby (but not inbound) school. I was so pleasantly surprised when I went on one of their Thursday morning tours. Our kids' teachers are the best. We were OK with a school that was not language immersion, which is popular with some of our friends. The Tools of the Mind curriculum is great for preschoolers. There are also a number of advantages to being in a Title 1 school like free aftercare this year and good administrative support. They also have a good autism program, and space for the extras like art, music, computers and a gym.

We are at H.D. Cooke and are very happy there. The PK3 program has been great for my child; the new principal is engaged and making a lot of changes to improve instruction at all grade levels; and the parent community is thriving. It's also been great for us to have a renovated building (much nicer than our old daycare) and specials classes everyday (art, music, PE, etc.) For us, having a short commute (as Cooke is our inbounds school) has also been important. I am glad to hear that OP you are taking a look at DCPS--we were reluctant as well last year when we were looking at schools, but once we started going to open houses we were surprised at how many schools we liked. We are doing the PS3 lottery this year, and in my many tours, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked all of the DCPS schools I visited. Having lived in DC for 15 years now, I'm used to hearing lots of disparaging remarks about the state of schools - and while I'm sure there are bad ones out there, all those I visited seemed quite good. SO, as a feel-good thread, I would love to hear from parents who are happy with their DCPS school. Where does your child go? What do you especially like about their school?
