it's actually Montgomery County, not Maryland, that has the super crazy alcoholic beverage rules. And this Montgomery County native/resident would gladly welcome DC and give those up.

The professional DC statehood organizers don't like the idea. But I think they are motivated partly by ideology and mostly by a desire for DC to become a state so that they can pad the local government with yet another layer of patronage and spoils.

At the same time, the most cogent longstanding argument against DC statehood ("Governor Barry") has lost its potency .... unless of course, his n'er-do-well, drug-thug, bank-vandal of a son gets on the DC council!

Retrocession is more likely than Statehood for DC. Federal land/buildings would still make up Washington DC.

I Think DC should absorb Arlington, PGC and MoCo, then go for statehood. I think it will leave all sides happier.

I'd go for that. And I'm a republican from VA.

Hell even letting DC pass it's own budget just like a state would be a good step forward. I'm not inclined to add more three more congressmen to Congress, so I'd rather they go to MD.

It would not be my first option - I'd prefer statehood. But I would take it in order to obtain full representation.

As long as Arlington can stay part of Virginia and not retrocede to DC I'm cool with it.

politically, it works. MD has two Dem senators already.

historically, it works. DC was once part of MD.

and now, finally, economically, it works, with DC's wealth exploding and no longer adding another poor Baltimore, Jr. to the welfare rolls.

Someone made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion on another thread that parts of DC should be given back to Maryland, and it got me thinking. Might it make sense for all of DC to revert to Maryland?

I know many will hate it from a pro-DC sense. But it would solve a lot of the Home Rule complexities DC now faces, and DC residents would finally get their Congressional representation. Maryland might get something of a tax boost from having all the extra revenue sources and tourism. DC's current government is no model of efficiency, so it might be improved by connecting with MD. MD already votes Dem, so simply adding DC to MD would not change many voting patterns.

I know it will never actually happen, but wouldn't it make a lot of sense?
