Really, space is at a premium and anything that will organize without taking up a lot of space is valuable. Personal comfort is also conducive to happiness so don't skimp if you don't have to. Clothing becomes very important. Comfort is in style is out. Although, interview and dinner out attire is necessary.

My kid has the 3 inch memory foam. But nothing else on your list. He seems to be surviving really well.

Really depends on the school and the dorm. Many dorms especially at older schools can't handle the electrical load of a microwave.

Memory foam is the norm these days, and I think the mattresses are even thinner than in my day. Don't buy the BBB sheet sets in a bag unless your kid is really into 100-thread count sheets and wants his room to look like every other kid's room on the dorm floor, because everybody is shopping at BBB. Most dorm beds are extra-long singles but check on what the school tells you.

A coffee machine. No Keurigs unless you want to keep buying him/her all those pods. Hot pots are out of fashion but they aren't forbidden in DC's dorm.

Shower buckets and a laundry bags or basket.

A cork board for pinning up pictures and random scraps of paper.

Power strips.

One of the best gifts DC got was a little tool kit in a cute canvas bag, I think from Home Depot. Indispensable for hanging pictures (if that's allowed) and adjusting the bedframe height (which was possible in DC's frosh dorm).

Laundry bag is helpful in addition to basket

I always wanted one of those arm rest pillows

Lap desk/cushioned base for studying or reading sitting up

Why not make your kid sleep on the floor. WTF a nice mattress pad is excessive?

What are the ten things a college student needs /"are really nice to have" for his dorm room? Not counting computer or mini fridge.

I assume hotpots are not longer allowed and/or have gone out of fashion. What about shower buckets?

The "sample" dorm room I saw at one school had been decked out by Target or BBB. It had a memory foam mattress topper to go on top of the dorm bed. Is this wishful thinking on their part or is it the "norm"?
