Also -- they need to do a light sanding between paint coats. Very tedious!

Hire a painter to do it, and make sure they will sand first and then repaint. It's a tedious job so I'd pay someone rather than DIY.

OP here. I purchased the cabinets new, with a painted "antique" finish that was factory applied before installation. And yes, some of them really have awful chipping after 15 years. Call me crazy, but I did not expect chipping paint at the 10 year mark. Maybe 20 years?

I think if I was in the market to completely replace my kitchen, I would go with a wood stain, rather than paint. But since they are structurally in good shape, and I don't have the budget for all new cabinets, I will look into having them professionally stripped and repainted.

We had ours redone professionally. They look fine. It has been 5 years..still fine with a few dings.

Definitely get it done professionally. We had our white kitchen cabinets repainted about a year ago. They look great.

We had ours painted about a year ago . We hired a painter because the previous owner painted them a very ugly chocolate brown and they needed to be stripped. It made a huge difference! We also repainted the walls and due to a series of appliance floods, just had new flooring put in. It feels like a totally different kitchen.

PP. I didn't mean "already" as in, wow that was soon. If they are chipping, you will never be able to DIY paint them with good results. In fact, if they are "already" chipping after 15 years, that suggests that they might require some prep work more than the average DIY-er can do. In any event, I would argue that well-painted cabinets should last longer than 15 years before chipping. Get it done professionally.

We saw a bunch while we were house hunting. Honestly, even the good paint jobs still looked like a do it yourself project and had visible chips. Personally, I'd look into just changing the stain instead.

We renovated our kitchen 15 years ago and it's getting close to time for a refresh. Our cabinet boxes are in really great condition, but the paint finish is starting to chip and peel. Has anybody successfully repainted their kitchen cabinets and, if so, did you do it yourself or have it done by a painter? How has the paint held up?
