8th graders hadn't been advanced beyond Geometry up until the 2013-2014 year. This is a new program a few months old. I hope it works out...just a few weeks ago there was an article about a musical prodigy who was going off campus for algebra 2

This isn't true. We just met with Wison about this an there is no rule in DCPS about what grade you can take APs. Now the vast majority of kids (including suburban kids) aren't ready for AP in 9th grade but for those who are ready they are available --I would assume suburban schools operate the same way.

ok. Report back AFTER you've tried to enroll a 9th grader in an AP class.. .even with a teacher recommendation from middle school.
I tried that last year and wasn't successful . I DO know of kids who got exemptions in the past but not recently. As for going past Geometry at Deal that is very new and experimental

There is a new initiative this year where several 7th graders are taking algebra and geometry simultaneously.

Also, I believe some kids have placed into Algebra in 6th after the 5th grade test - but that is less common.

There is crime in a city. I mean, Deal is very safe, and so is that neighborhood, but cities are cities. Just be prepared for that.

Another Deal parent here. We have a 6th grader there - agree they run a tight ship, so safety has never been a concern for us. They do give a math placement exam (to incoming 6th graders) - so kids are placed in pre-Algebra or Math 6 (when I was in school I didn't take pre-Algebra until 7th grade). Our child came from a bi-lingual (Spanish/English) school and is in the Spanish humanities class which is quite rigorous. It's a large school, but broken down in to teams of 100 kids, so it's a bit more manageable. I would highly recommend it!

I should add kids go through metal detectors on the way in. We have had metal forks for lunch confiscated which is ridiculous and bothers me but that is how serious they take safety.

Very safe, the team runs a very tight ship. The entire school is IB rather than having an IB track. There is differentiation especially in math. As a parent of one special ed kid and one advanced math kid I can tell you they have pushed both of my kids. I find the English very advanced and demanding both in reading and writing. Math has been great including my 7th grader taking geometry.

There are some thinG's I don't like like the year long history project in 8th grade and some foreign language teachers are pretty weak. But overall we have been very happy.

Hi. My second post on schools here. We are moving from Oregon and are interested in Deal Middle School. My daughter is gifted (probably like all NW kids). I was hoping to keep her in classes with other highly motivated students. Do they differentiate at Deal or are all the kids in the IB program together? And, is the school safe? I know that's a silly question but we are from a small town on the beach in Oregon with absolutely no crime. Any insight is most appreciated. Thanks!
