You sound like a real peach, PP.

I've read they are supposed to grade on mastery and not effort but it looks like our school doesn't care about that.

If she knows it, she'll have to demonstrate that through X number of times. If she's obstinate and refuses to work, the teacher can't fairly assess her.

Maybe you should work on parenting her so that she understands what cooperation means.

There should be a chart on the bottom right with bars and a dot. The dot is where your child's level is. There's an explanation of what it means.

Here is a good place to start:

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/info/grading/how-to-read-the-curriculum-2.0-kindergarten-report-card.pdf

Also, here is the kindergarten curriculum:

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/elementary/parent-guide-traditional-kindergarten-en.pdf

In marking periods 1 and 2, PE covered:

effects of exercise (heart)
locomotor skills (walk, run, hop, jump, gallop)
relationships with objects (inside/outside, around, through, under/over, on/off, across, near/far, in front/behind), catch self-tossed objects in self-space, throw underhand

So if your child has an I in PE, then maybe he/she hasn't mastered galloping, or maybe he/she hasn't mastered throwing something up in the air and catching it, or something like that.

Where does it say reading level? I see a chart for reading levels but not where DC fits into that.

I'm not objecting to the grades. It would just be helpful to know what stuff means. Does that mean my child is not following directions in pays ed or something else?

It is KINDERGARTEN.

DD got a bunch of Is for things the teacher knows she knows. She's sometimes uncooperative about doing her work.

relax OP. It's just K. It won't go onto the college transcript. Look at the reading level. Is your DC on target for reading level? Does your DC sit and listen well? Follow directions? Do you get notes from the teacher stating that your DC is not doing these things? If not, then don't worry.

If you have questions, ask the teacher. You can also go onto the MCPS website to find out more about how the report cards are broken down.

BTW - my DC has gotten an I in PhysEd, too, in 3rd grade. It's NBD.

Agree completely. First quarter at least you have a parent teacher conference to get some insight. Second quarter you get NOTHING.

I can understand if they don't want to do letter grades in early elementary, but then they should allow the teachers to write in a small blurb on your kids weaknesses so that you can specifically help them improve. My kid got an I in 'interpreting art'. WTF?? How is she interpreting art incorrectly or not up to grade level.

I've seen people post on here that you can request a conference with your kid's teacher and I've emailed her several times (she's very good!). But, I still feel that the report card should provide more useful info than it does in early ES.
