My British friends tell me no--it's the kind of thing your elderly grandmother might say. Not vulgarly racist, but not currently acceptable.

Is "colored" commonly used in the UK?

He will not go away. He is and will continue to be one of the great actors of the 21st Century. If you cannot appreciate talent, grace, intelligence and wit, I suggest you continue to watch movies loaded with US actors that you can identify with. Otherwise, let us who appreciate what BC brings to the world of entertainment enjoy him.

Oh look. One of the Cumberbitches arrived. I love that Lainey Gossip calls you all Cumhards.

What's your beef? He's a talented actor who just works a lot. He's lovely and gracious. Or do you prefer to follow Kim Kardashian?

It would be nice if people looked at situations holistically instead of pouncing on people for using the wrong term in one moment.

Agreed.

^ Your last sentence is very well-worded and I couldn't agree more.

And no, I'm not a BC fan trying to cover for him. I genuinely think it was a slip, he apologized and why are we talking about it.

The nuances of language. That we think "colored people" is offensive, but scholars on the topic of race will often speak and write passionately about "people of color."

Or, the idea that "Negro" is offensive when it's merely outdated (as is "colored.")

Or the weird assumption that every black person is "African-American."

No, they're not. That's quite possibly the most ridiculous thing anyone has every typed on DCUM. Offensive, too.

But the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is fine. Okay, got it.

Poor guy. Relax, Benedict. It's crazy on this side of the Pond.
