With the new grading ES,P,I and N - you can't judge by the report card how he is really doing (see previous posts from last year on the grading) Hopefully, 6th grade won't be a shocker when your child has actual meaningful grades. That said, when reviewing the MAP grades, look at the highest and average for the year(s), if it's just one low score than don't worry about it.

Given that his reading level is just on grade level I would talk to the teacher. (I don't mean that the reading level is necessarily concerning but if it hasn't gone up this quarter then he will be below grade level so I would want to know if he has moved up to "U").

It is one data point from one point in time. Maybe he was having a bad day.

Is that below grade level?

Students take MAP-R three times a year. You might want to contact his teacher to get his previous MAP-R scores. His teacher might be able to tell you the areas that he didn't do well. If it were me, I would definitely contact the teacher. I would also start paying more attention to his reading comprehension and vocab.

You should speak to the teacher and see what she is doing to help him improve. I am a 5th grade teacher and I wouldn't necessarily contact the parent based on MAP-R scores alone. If they are a struggling reader it should have been brought up at conferences. Check the reading level on the report card, this will give you a lot of information.

Subject: 5th Grade Low MAP-R
Looking at my 5th graders registration form for next year and noticed his score is not good, 195. Math score is much better. Should I be concerned? Frustrated that I have not heard from his teacher if he is struggling.
Any suggestions?
