The guaranteed admission program has very specific rules and you must attend CC for two years to qualify. (This is for the Virginia schools.)

I can't imagine most kids, especially those with a high GPA, who would choose to attend community college first, unless it came down to a matter of finances.

Many times, the kids who transfer from CC to 4-year universities need to attend an extra semester/extra session to get all of the necessary credits to graduate. A lot of people think it's going to be 2 years CC and 2 years at the transfer school, but that's not always the case.

As for the original question, I agree with the PP who asked why OP's DD was allowed to apply to the other schools in the first place.

You're not unreasonable to not want to take on the debt, but I don't understand letting her apply to the school if you have no intention of letting her go, it kind of feels like you set her up. I agree with the PP to lay out for them what you can contribute, make sure your DD understands what student loan debt will do to her finances after she graduates, and then let the two of them figure out how to afford the rest.

If she wants to take out loans, that's her choice. If your ex wants to take out loans, that's his choice. Let her know how much you're willing/able to contribute and let her make her choice. Someday she'll probably look back and wish she'd taken your advice, but this is all part of growing up.

yep, apply for spring, but skip CC if her grades put her in range for that school
Or look for a school with a later deadline. Some have deadlines in March or April

Offer her a car and a trip overseas for a "mission trip".

It's a good strategic move. Her grades/SATs won't go against ranking so she has a better chance and many 1st year students drop out.

No you aren't. Student loans are such a burden.

My dd did not get into her first choice college a state school. My advice was to wait for the rest of the decisions to come in, and if nothing comes in at our state school capped price range she can attend CC for a semester and reapply. My Ex feels she should go to her second choice school and take out loans. I am close to retirement and do no want to incur debt, nor do I want my DD to take out loans. Is my position inflexible, I feel like I am always the bad guy!
