That's partly the point of the envelope - no on can see how much or how little you're putting in. Or if it's just attendance.


The people working in the parish office know. And it's not their business.

I might give $50 per week but never take part in drives of any kind. Or I might donate goods to the needy constantly yet never hand the Church cash so they may contribute to their legal [pedophile court cases] needs or to their electric bill for keeping the lights on all day, every day.

Our church doesn't take attendance usually. Two, maybe three, times a year the ushers do a head count at each Mass to get a sense of numbers but its nothing scientific.

Good point -- an envelope is better at actually confirming attendance -- although you could cheat by getting a friend to put your envelope in the basket in your absence.

Better just to count heads. Then you get all the visitors and kids who don't contribute regularly

We use ParishPay which is the same basic idea. I do $20/week first collection and vary amounts for the special second collections (some appeals are closer to my heart and I do more) and make one bigger gift to the annual appeal. I would be able to do more if I didn't also have 3 parish school tuitions (or we had bigger incomes.) I give lots of my time and talent. Treasure will have to come later!

Yes -- churches love this approach, because many people forget to check in and just keep giving the money every sunday whether they still go to the church or not.

And if you feel odd not putting money in the collection basket, they will send you little envelopes you can use on sundays, so people around you won't think you're a slacker. Most importantly, if you miss a sunday, your money will do to the church anyhow, the electronic way. This works well for churches who don't really care if people come on a regular basis, as long as they get their money.
