It is case by case depending on the school. No matter what, for sought after schools your chances of getting in for either PK3 or PK4 are slim.

This is completely untrue. Ps3 is often easier than pk4 but in general higher grades are easier as there is much less competition. That said, it varies considerably by school.

OP asked whether pk3 is easier to get into than pk4. Duh.

For MV it was an expansion year for PK4. Several new families got in.

It just depends on the school. Many DCPS have more OOB seats for PK4 than PK3. That is certainly the case at mine. At some charters like MV, most of the PK3 spots are taken by subs and more PK4 spots open up, so it can be easier then. But from what I have heard, it is easiest to get a spot above K.

Ward 3 schools do not have PK3. (Although I think Hyde is about to get it.)

It depends on the school, the number of PK3 vs PK4 classrooms, the size of those classes. Our school, for example, has two PK3 classes of 15 kids each, but they have 3 classes of PK4 with 20 kids each. As a result, for our school, it's much easier to get in at PK4 level. Other schools only have a couple of PK4 seats open after factoring in the rising PK4ers from last year, while there are are a larger number of open seats at play in the lottery for PK3.

Is there a particular school you're looking at?

Is one year harder to get into than the other?
