Older DS was reading above grade level in K. Second DS is on grade level, according to his teachers. I'm not concerned.

The expectation is not that they will be reading fluently by the end of K. Simple books with sight words and picture clues.

Yes, but I actively taught him how to read. It wasn't necessary in kindergarten though although many of his classmates could read by then as well.

Sort of. He can read very basic books. His teacher says he's right in the middle of his class in terms of reading. I wish he was more interested in it, but he's not. Even in terms of being read TO, he's not into it unless it is "Captain Underpants" books or something equally silly.

My DS just turned 4 and can read brothers old books. But brother also loves to read and reads at least 2 grades above his grade level so I'm sure that influences him.

Neither of my kids really read until 1st grade, but most kids read in K.

Yes, my DD taught herself to read before K but it would have been much better if she hadn't.

My K boy is sounding out some words can sight read a few short words but is not reading. It's my impression that he's in the lower third of the kids in his private. I am not concerned because he's a smart kid and I know it will come. He asks great questions, loves school, is enjoying learning and is excited to read. For what it's worth his sister was the same way in K and you can't peel her out of a book now.

The range of pre-reading abilities in K is enormous. Some don't know their letters, some can read fluently.

My oldest did not read in K, and then suddenly started reading Harry Potter in first grade. Huge leap.
My 4 year old is deciphering early readers in preschool, but that is not a guarantee she will be reading by K.

Mine really struggled through k and it bothered me so much. I wished I had chilled over it and listened to people who said she would take off in first grade, because that is exactly what happened. She's now on chapter books and can read super well. Went from lowest reading group to higher/middle group and LOVES to read. I think the K expectation is ridiculous. Kids are ready when they are ready.

Mine can read the short books they send home with him but he's not reading on his own for fun in his room. I wouldn't call him a fluent reader and he seems to be one of the better readers in his good public school in N. Arlington.

In my child's K class they are learning to read this year. The kids seem to be at all sorts of levels.
