I think you can be fired for any reason, however I am not sure if you can be fired for retaliation which if you are fired from this job, this could be a reason for it and you may be able to sue.
Again, do some research and find out.
Unless this is a really great job, is it going to be worth it? Do you really want to stay in a work environment where both your boss and this former friend work with you? It may be awkward.....
If boss fires OP because OP said/did something dumb and insulting, how is that fired for retaliation? Do you mean in retaliation? If so, that only applies when the person is fired for speaking up against discrimination based on a protected class.
Sorry, OP, people get fired for poor judgment all the time.
