Why not do the lego plates?

10x10x10x10 for 2 rows with it framed with molding, almost like a lip around the lego plates.

Or you can always do a whiteboard or chalkboard paint on the surface top of the table for drawing

I think you could cover what you could with the lego plates and leave the rest blank. Maybe paint the uncovered edge black to look like a road, could use with matchbox cars or the smaller vehicles that come with lego.

What about printing pictures out of all your family and then using them yo decoupage the table. It would be a unique table and a great way for your kids to see pictures of extended family.

You can get base plates in different sizes than 10x10.

8 x 32 plus 8 x 12 makes 44". Make three rows like this and you have a depth of 24".

Otherwise, depends on the type of surface. You could paint it, maybe (not if it's laminate or veneer, though). Or cover it with contact paper.

Hi there! I am hoping for some help from those of you that are better at these types of things than I am I would love to do something like this (http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2013/02/lego-meets-lack/) for my kiddos but would prefer to use the old coffee table I already have (44 " x 24"). The surface is pretty scratched so I definitely need to cover it, but the Lego baseplates are 10" x 10". Any other ideas for something cute and easy to cover the top? Thanks in advance!!
