Seriously, the cords are no joke. Don't do it. Get whatever you want, as long as it's cordless.

I've had mini blinds in my son's rooms (and mine) for years. When he was little, I used cord covers I bought at Babies R Us. He also hard dark curtains I bought at JC Penney so he could take a nap.

I put plantation shutters in my children's rooms. No cords, didn't have to deal with curtains, and it is an extra thing the little ones would have to figure out how to open to get to the window to retry to open it.

I HATE cleaning blinds so I wouldn't have them! And the cords are dangerous.

Like the previous suggestions. If you decide to invest the $$ now we got hunter Douglas blinds for the upstairs bedrooms - duette, with tabs to raise and lower so no cords. They're great.

Lowes has cordless honeycomb (cellular shades) you can buy off the shelf and then they cut to size wih a machine in store. I think HD does, too, but I think Lowes' are better quality. Around $50-60 depending on window size. I think the brand is Levolor. Don't get Allen Roth, poor quality.

I find them sort of old fashioned and ugly and I don't like all the cords. DH thinks we can keep them for 5 years and then update - our kids are 4 and 6.

Our other options are roman blinds, honeycomb blackout shades (expensive), and blackout curtains.

The JCPenny honeycomb blackout shades are cheap and actually look pretty good.

Also, mini blinds are ugly. And dust magnets.

My friend's 3.5 year old just almost strangled on cords normally put up, but accidentally left down. So NOPE.
