Whatever route you go for bed size, if you don't need a footboard/bunk/loft, then I recommend just buying a headboard and attaching it to a metal bed frame. This is a lot cheaper than buying a bed frame that you really won't see or won't add any additional structure.

Full/queen with a twin trundle bed?

Get him as big a bed as possible - full or queen. Guests can make do with air mattress or he can use spare and let guests have bed.

We only saw twin bunks and a twin over full bunk today (no full over full). Also saw a full loft (desk underneath). Whenever I see bunks, I think how hard it will be to change sheets/make top bunk! And, the bunk beds set-ups all had foot boards. Would like to avoid a foot board since kid is already tall. I really would like to buy a quality bed(s) that he will not outgrow and will last for 25+ years. Fortunately, kid is easy-going; he is happy with idea of a new bed(s) and is excited to re-arrange room.

What about the twin over a full bunk bed? Or even a full over a full. You have the extra bed and son still gets a full.

He likes the idea of two twins - said he would read on one and sleep in the other. He is a great sleeper - so I do want him to keep sleeping soundly. Appreciate your input, pps.

Our son will be 9 and we are looking at options to replace his broken bed (it is a full size sleigh bed that I had prior to marriage). His bedroom is a good size so we are considering: 1.) replace with full size bed without foot-board so he won't outgrow) or 2.) get two twin beds for the room. The appeal of the twin beds is that it would be nice when he has a friend sleepover and/or we have house guests, e.g., a cousin visiting. At the store today, the twin beds looked so little - I think because I am used to seeing him fall asleep in the full size bed. Anyone with older kids/teens have any thoughts on what would work better?
