Can you create a wall with an Expedit and cubbies?

Why can't you just put hooks on one of the half walls? You won't be able to hang long coats there, but everything else will be fine and bonus, the kids hang up their own coats.

Read apartment therapy about how to create an entry way

Could you put hooks at the top of the stairs? You could do 3 up high and then 5 underneath for kids. You can find some nice s hooks from lowes or Home Depot.

There is no door. Just the one way down when we enter from the garage, but it isn't really conducive to getting the kids dressed and undressed.

Yes, that's exactly correct. That would be possible. It would clutter the stairs/entry, but better than cluttering the living room, I guess.

Another option, could be hanging a coat rack in the garage and shed grown up/older kids coats there.

and floating shelf or key rack for your keys.

Ooh, that coat rack is interesting, and does take up far less space. Might end up kind of messy though to be directly in a living room if a family of 4 had more than one neutral colored jacket and scarf Hmm...

Yeah, I'm not comfortable posting. But basically there are no walls for hooks and no logical place for a standing coat rack or armoire. As for the closet downstairs, imagine you enter your house through the basement and the only closet is on the other side of the basement - you wouldn't want to put down the kids and bundles to deal with your coat, or get the kids coats on down there on the way out.

Stick a rack lower on the wall... and use the coat closet only for the full-length coats?

We live in a rented town house - haven't been here terribly long, but long enough that I'm trying to clean up and reorganize now that we're mostly comfortable in the space.

We have to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to the living room. There is a tiny coat closet by the front door, though we enter through the back door/garage. 2 kids, and the youngest is 1, so she gets carried up and down the stairs along with arm fulls of groceries or whatever other "stuff" we might have that day. We don't really use the downstairs coat closet because it's not near the entrance we use, and putting down baby to deal with shoes, coats, and bundles is way too complicated. Like most people, I'd rather enter my living room and then put down my things and deal with my coat (and everyone else's) - but there's no place to put the coats (the chair is no longer an acceptable place for them to live, I've decided).

There is literally no wall available for a hanging coat rack there are only half walls other than the perimeter and the ones near the living room entrance have only a bathroom door and the thermostat and light switches so they are unavailable. A standing coat rack would be beyond an eyesore since there's no entry way /foyer once you get up the stairs. I'm considering an ottoman type trunk to keep the main jackets that are being used daily, but is that too "dorm room"?

Where do the coats go? I love the layout of the house and have had no problem with any other types of storage, but this is ridiculous. Help!
