Yup. He has A DHD as well. Will never have the answer about what was going on with him...but helpful to know your DH manifests similar symptoms and no addiction. His behavior was and will always be a puzzle to me...I have to accept I will never know for certain. Its over, moving on.

Thank you for your honest feedback everyone.

He sweats excessively especially at night. It's the body's way of trying to rid itself of the extra glucose. When it's really bad, he'll pee the bed. Any time he gains weight, his medication must be adjusted. He's also got poor 'sleep hygiene', doesn't keep regular sleep hours and falls asleep several times during the day. He also had problems keeping a job, was under-employed, yet, has a paralyzing fear of failure so he doesn't even try sometimes (thank you ADHD/Anxiety). Bloody noses aren't unusual when you've got poor health or a 'bleeder' capillary in the nose (I've got one).

My DH was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at age 35. He was fit and trim but has a strong family history of it. It's why it's called the silent killer. Symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for something else. Or, it could be drugs but that's hard to hide for 2+ years.

OP here. Id believe that however diabetes doesn't cause people to refuse to work, take out student loans with no explanation for where money went, drop out of college three times and have zero worries or cares when bill collectors call and threaten to shut off utilities.

FFS, I'm relieved I had the sense to get out before having kids with him. For those of you who have a family member with severe addiction issues....how long did it take you to figure it out? And how did they conceal it from you?

You must have missed the part where I said my DH also has ADHD. He dropped out of college twice, has gotten fired from 2 jobs, has problems with 'initiation' so getting another job is difficult and ignores unpleasantness even when it's looming in front of him.

I'm not saying that's what your BF has or that you shouldn't be grateful you didn't have kids but you can't assume that it's an unknown addiction.

I've suspected my brother does. It's either bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or drugs. He maintains a well paying job, lives in a million dollar house, has a wife and kids. But he has angry mood swings that vacillate wildly very quickly. Highs and lows - either very mopey or high strung. Dishonesty issues. Unreliable. Gained quite a bit of weight (in a short amount of time), always looking for "the next thing" to hone his attention on, briefly, before moving on to something else.

OP here. That's what I thought, but how to explain massive weight gain?

Sounds like my DH who has ADHD/depression/diabetes. Each episode gets written off as a health issue, a work issue, or a discrete problem. The addict is in denial himself so why wouldn't you be too? If the addict is not in denial, he's usually an expert liar and manipulator. Most people want to believe their loved ones and will do almost anything to maintain a relationship with a loved one, up to and including believing the most outlandish stories ("I was just holding those drugs for someone else.") It's only in retrospect that you see clearly the pattern and how obvious it was. Stop blaming yourself for not being a genius.

Suspicious my 30 year old ex is an addict but have no direct proof because I never saw him use (shared an apartment with him for 2 1\2 years where he ripped me off the entire time). No one in his family or circle of friends ever talked about it-they just think he's irresponsible and lazy, end of story. Although maybe he was dealing to them so that's why no one talked about it...

He dropped out of college three times. Took out $18000 in loans the third time but never went to class. Frequent bloody noses. Profuse sweating in the middle of winter. Treated for an abscess on his spine. Sleeping at odd hours of the day. Major weight gain. Poor hygiene. Occasionally slurred his speech. Zero motivation to work and absolute insane irrational resistance to getting a job.

So as I write this out it seems pretty obvious to me he was using. My question to those of you with addicts in your life is thsi...how on earth did manage to hide it from me and why is it so hard to snap out of denial that he was likely using?
