FYI, Ikea sells quartz. If you can get it on one of their 20% off sales, the price is the best in the area.

I would get a couple of contractor estimates just so you have them for comparison. It might be helpful to know what their labor estimates would be so you can maybe do a mix of DiY and having a professional do some.
We just did our kitchen which is only slightly larger and spent twice that-but it did include a little bit of demo and some extra carpentry. It broke down as follows:
Labor/contractor provided materials: $17k (this included all demo, plumbing, electrical work, painting, flooring, backsplash, new lights, and all labor. We also had to have additional venting added for a range hood and dryer, so your costs would be lower)
Cabinets: $12k (could definitely save here, we splurged a bit and did semi-custom with lots of pull out shelves, etc)
Counters: $5k (we did Quartz, and probably have a larger than expected counter area for our kitchen size)
Sink/faucet/new disposal: $1k
Appliances: $4k for fridge, washer, and dryer

Just to point that that "wood cabinet frames" are total BS. No one makes cabinet frames of wood except crazy custom cabinet makers any longer, and when they do, they may ask you to sign a release that you understand that wood is a dimensionally unstable product that expands and contracts with seasonal variations in temperature, humidity and light.

I think you could probably swing it, barely, but just want to chime in and say you should probably not plan on a built-in desk. I originally planned on one in my own smallish kitchen--150 sf--and by the time I'd done several iterations of planning (thank you, architect friend and IKEA 3D planner) the desk was gone. You have to sacrifice too much valuable counter space and storage for that. Better to just devote a corner of the dining room to a work space.

For $20k, do an Ikea kitchen and you should be able to do it on budget - or within a few thousand. It means lower end (but not cheap finishings): like granite counters, basic but quality appliances (Frigidaire, Maytag, WHIrlpool), basic faucet and pulls from home depot. You can find some pretty and basic tiles at Home Depot or lowes for super cheap - everyone uses the HD white subway tile, and it always looks nice for minimal cost. Don't move any plumbing or any electric and you should be fine.

Quartz is more than granite. From low to high price points are usually formica/granite/some marble & quartzite/quartz. Quartz is a manmade product and quartzite is hewed out of quarries. Skip the built in desk in such a small kitchen. Save the backsplash project for a later date-it is ancillary and decorative.
A 12x 8x4 dumpster is about 500+ A/B level granite 4000 +sink/faucet 600 + fridge/dishwasher/range 2500 + microwave on shelf 200 + rangehood 400=$8200.
That estimate leaves $11,800 for cabinets, labor, floor. Cabinets budget $2500 and you assemble them-$14,300. You also do most of the demo. Another budget saver is get cheap counters and replace them later. Solid wood cabinet frames and doors and dovetail drawers are worth it.

I would absolutely get Ikea over home depot. Regret that we did not get Ikea, our cabinets cost twice as much and haven't held up as well.
I think you could do it for that, but its a lot of budgeting to stay within that range. Mostly depends on who is doing the work. and the appliances.

If you want new appliances and aren't doing much of the work yourself, that budget isn't realistic for a total gut. I would price out the IKEA option first to see how much that is to get a fair ballpark estimate.

I did a remodel about 4 years ago - cost about $15K in total. Cabinets, counter, sink, disposal, appliances, flooring (tile), paint, labor. Cabinets - just the materials cost - was about half of that, and I had only about 9 of them. So that will likely be your biggest expense.
Most of my friends were surprised at how little I spent, so $20K for everything might be a little tight. Do you have to do flooring too? The actual tile might be cheap but the labor can add up.
