Good for you, OP.
We bought our large SFH when the market was lowest (in 1990s). In the months that it took for the house to be built, the housing prices started to rise. The builder did his best for us to change our mind so that they could sell to someone else for a higher price. Anyways, that did not happen. We have upgraded bits and pieces over the years, but are due for a fresh paint job and some bathroom upgrades (if we want).
This one fact (of having a cheap house) has meant that I have been able to SAHM as well as have retirement and college money. Except for the mortgage we have no debt. Schools are not stellar - but kids go to magnet schools so it not been an issue.

OP, our lifestyle and income is similar to yours, except for the homeschooling business. Be prepared to be ripped to shreds for daring to suggest that anyone can survive on HHI less than 200k. I would offer more support, but it is pretty much pointless.

Yeah, I can see how that would make your arrangement possible. I want my kids to attend school. Housing in a decent school district is expensive. If school were not an issue, we could live in a more affordable area within DMV.

I posted in the single woman thread that we lived in Bethesda on a slightly higher income than yours, and was met with a certain amount of disbelief.
The reality is that most posters on DCUM don't know how to save and live frugally.

It is entirely doable. The biggest burden on most families in DMV is housing cost. If you have the flexibility of living in not the most desired areas (which are usually driven by school assignments) - you can live well and save in this amount.
You do not have the cost of housing and childcare in your family - something that is killing most people here.

I'm SICK of reading the "500k, woe is me threads". I'm also sick of seeing the bashing going on towards the single woman in the other thread.
We make 90k pretax. DH is civil service. I stay home with both kids, 3 and 8 months.
We have two cars, max out TSP and each of our Roth IRAs. I was a music teacher in a previous life, and volunteer lessons weekly. Considering charging for my services in the near future, but I enjoy the set up. We own (and are paying mortgage on) a 3 bedroom home in a nice, safe neighborhood. We will likely homeschool our kids because public school isn't in line with our worldview.
Husband gets every other Friday off. We eat healthy food, and take yearly vacations to california to see my family. We have an active, healthy family - physically and socially.
Enough of the poor mouthing on dcum - you folks are pathetic.
