They are pushing hard for people to use alternate means of transportation besides cars, and this is one way of literally putting the county money where its mouth is. I'm hoping to get out this weekend and run.

OP here: That is fantastic! And I agree. If you want people to use alternate transport, you've got to make it really, really easy for them.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Custis trail plowed when I went for a run yesterday. Looks like it's getting a fair amount of use, too. Money well spent.

Why is Reston not cleaning the trail?

Can I piggyback on this and ask how the Mt. Vernon trail is? Are any long stretches from Arlington to Alexandria/Mt. Vernon clear/treated?

This is the best place to find out about trail conditions:

ArlCo this year budgeted for snow removal on some of the major heavily-traveled trails. W&OD in Arlington, Custis, Bluemont between George Mason Dr and the W&OD, Mt Vernon trail.

They are pushing hard for people to use alternate means of transportation besides cars, and this is one way of literally putting the county money where its mouth is. I'm hoping to get out this weekend and run.

Because that would be really expensive and they (Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority) don't have the budget for it.

Whoever it is who maintains the trail. I see people mowing along there all the time; presumably there is an agency in charge of it. Look, I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation, if that's what you are getting at. Lots of bike trails are cleared by the cities/counties that maintain them.

Who are "they" supposed to be?

I would assume it's covered in ice and snow since it doesn't get treated.

Oops, sorry--I mean the stretch through Reston.

Is it icy? I'm hoping to go for a run today but that trail can be treacherous. Thanks.
