I was a grad student and lived off campus. I was teaching, doing research, and attending classes. Coming home to freshly laundered and folded underwear inside my front door was one of the highlights of my week.

Since I lived off campus, I don't know if the university had laundry service. But there was a woman in town who would pick up, take it to the laundromat, fold it, and return it to my door. The laundromat did not offer wash and fold service.

As the mom of 4, I think that would be a fantastic gift from DH-- one year of door to door wash and fold.

I understand that you do not want strangers go through your laundry or come across as an elitist BUT I am sure some students were appreciating the fact that they could earn money doing this job.

Nothing about the PP's post was elitist. PP was just describing how it worked. Get a grip and stop trying to find issues when there are none.

Reading comprehension, please. I did not say p(pp) was elitist. I am saying that there could be 2 possible reasons for someone not using the service (among many) - but, it could be that some students actually depended on providing these services and getting paid for it.

At my college two students started one and ran it themselves. The school had nothing to do with it. One of them got a great business school application essay out of it, and got into HBS. Was really very entrepreneurial of them.

Here' one for the books. When my husband went to college 40 years ago his southern college still had maids to clean the dorm rooms. Crazy!

My sons go to a college with a laundry service but don't know many kids who use it. My kids have been doing their own laundry since their early teens.

If I remember correctly when my sister enrolled at Notre Dame (close to thirty years ago - yikes!), the laundry service was mandatory for the men, but optional for the women. I recall being appalled. I went to Cornell where everybody had to deal with the laundry rooms in the dorms.

When we went to college, I was floored that the RAs gave tutorials for students who didn't know how to do their laundry. I saw signs in my dorm for this but thought it was a joke. How sad is it that an 18 yr doesn't know how to do their own laundry. My 8 year old does his own laundry. Anyway, I guess if colleges don't have washers and dryers, a service like this would be less time consuming than driving/taking a cab/bus to the laundromat and back. If the dorms have washers and dryers, this service is for lazy students.

My mom had laundry service at college in the late 1950s. There were no laundry facilities on campus. Eventually she found an off campus laundromat and canceled it.

It's definitely for the spoiled kids. There are tons of businesses that will come to your house to pick up your laundry, wash, fluff, and fold it, and bring it back to your house. Alternatively, some house cleaning services offer to come in and do your laundry using your own machines.

You know you can take your laundry to a wash and fold laundromat, right?

I think you'd actually have to be enrolled in a college to use the service.

They had one at the school that I went to 20 years ago, so it's not exactly a new thing.

I recently learned that some collegs have laundry servies. Tell me more about this. What colleges, why? how much do they cost? why are they provided? I am so curious and also so interested in one for myself....
