the one on Jefferson Davis Hwy. My DC's school is nearby so I shoot in there for something once every two weeks. As you enter, immediately to the right there is usually a shipping flat of tropicals - usually all of the same type - for $10.95. It is hit or miss. Clearly someone is buy lots of these plants somewhere so you never know what you'll find and they will usually all be the same plant. But when the big tropicals are in I will grab them. I usually repot and fertilize because I think sometimes Shoppers gets them cheap because they've overgrown their pots.

I have a palm from ikea that my mother gave me 10 years ago for my first apartment. It is now so tall that it almost doesn't fit in my house (8 ft ceilings). I'm going to be really sad the day I have to give it up.

When I moved here two years ago, I bought a large (6 feet high) fiddle leaf fig tree, and a very pretty chest high plant (the one with stalks and 8 leaves on the end) at Home Depot in Arlington.

They have endured a lot and still look great, OP. I've also bought a few others from online (trying to get a little of my home state in my house), but they are not traditionally houseplants and when we have gone away, they've died--even when someone comes to water. (So, don't do citrus!) There is a reason that houseplants tend to be not of many varieties. Those two I mentioned above will survive through a little neglect.

Ah, there is another--I'm babysitting it for a friend--it looks like an elephant ear type. and Is about 5'5" with 6 leaves. So easy!

Wait until spring. They truck the plants up from warmer climates, but they store them outside.

I've had good luck with Home Depot houseplants, and they have some big, beautiful ones.

Home Depot/ Lowe's in season.

Ikea's are usually priced well, and have lasted for a bit.

Giant often has sales, though they're not as large.

Note reasonably priced . I have looked at Merrifield and Johnson's and find them way out of my budget. Looking for a find.
