For the kids' beds, we use the summer bedspreads with flannel sheets and if it's really cold, add a fleece blanket under the bedspread. They wear long sleeve pajamas. For the adults,we use a heavier blanket and no other change.

I bought a down-alternative comforter from The Company store. You can choose which level of warmth (thickness) you want. It was worth the price.

I switch from a thin quilt to a duvet in the winter, and sometimes use flannel sheets, too. If it's really cold I add an extra fleece blanket and wear heavier sleepwear and maybe even socks. My husband wears a hat to bed (he's bald).

I agree with the PPs who mentioned the comforters and duvets. We switch our bedding out from regular bedspreads to these in the fall. We also have warm pajamas to keep us toasty.

On our bed, we also have a heated mattress pad. We turn it on for several minutes before getting into bed, and it warms the bed up so it's not cold when we get in it.

We keep the house at 62 and sleep under a wool blanket and sometimes 2 plus a duvet. I have an electric blanket too but haven't used it this year.

Heating blankets raise my electric bill less than a dollar a month in the winter.

Dual zone HVAC: kid's room is 65 at night, adults' at 60. Winter beds are in flannel sheets, a fleece blanket and a heavy down-alternative duvet. People are in fleece or flannel PJs. We are cozy and sleep like logs. (And the programmable thermostat raises the temps back up in the morning so it doesn't hurt to get out of bed.)

+1. Spend money on cheap sleepwear instead of expensive bedding.

In this house it's 68 degrees and duvet/thin blanket/sheet combo for everyone's rooms. Kids wear light pjs, adults wear nothing. Perfectly warm and cozy all winter. Only thing is that duvets are not cheap.

We live in an apartment with no individual control over the temperature, so it's often hot to the point of having to crack windows in the winter time. So just a sheet and blanket with extra covers handy if needed, and as little clothing as possible. It's actually cooler in the bedrooms in the summer.

Thinking of switching out traditional blankets and bedspreads with duvets in order to save a little on the heating bill. I’m just wondering if it’s worth it. How do you keep yourself and your family warm in bed in the winter time - cooler temperature and heavier covers/clothing, or crank the heat up with lighter covers/clothing?
