Why do people feel so compelled to be nasty???

As close as possible to a MARC station.

+1 and it will still be a pretty terrible commute.

in Ho Co?

Diversity is around Columbia, Laurel.

The western part is still very white, but schools are fantastic. You can't beat Centennial and River Hill.

Laurel is not Howard. It's in PG.

Laurel spans four counties. The city is incorporated in PG County, but has mailing addresses in Howard, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel. The Howard County part of Laurel includes High Ridge, Whiskey Bottom, Leishear Village, and Hammond Village. If OP is interested in living in this part of the county, I'd recommend Hammond Village. Good school pyramid. Right on both 95 and 29. And the MARC station is fairly close too.

Lime Kiln and Clarksville Middle are great schools. They're both diverse, have great state test scores, active PTA, etc. Howard County doesn't have a magnet program because each school has GT specialists and provide GT services at all school campuses. Actually, there are plenty of people who commute to DC who live in neighborhoods that are zoned to both of these middle schools. Go to the Howard County School website http://www.hcpss.org to obtain more information (demographics, test scores, school profiles, etc.) about each school and to look at the school boundary maps. HCPS website and each school's individual website will offer you lots of information.

There are many other great schools. However, with a commute to DC you wouldn't want to go in further north than Highway 32.

Your commute would ruin your life. Not being mean, just stating a fact. If you're committed though look at Highland or Clarksville.

I think Laurel is split between PG and Howard.
