"Just built in 1999" is 15 years ago. I don't know how long fields typically last. Do you?

Also, to put the $790,000 in perspective: the fiscal-year 2015 MCPS capital budget of MCPS was $233,195,000. $790,000 is 0.4% of that (although a dollar in 1999 was worth more than it is now, so that doesn't work exactly). The new Clarksburg/Damascus middle school is budgeted for $51,000,000.

I guess my real question is why they had to sell the land anyway? It was obviously being used for something. And, if MCPS needs such a large area for a bus depot, they must have realized how difficult it would be to relocate it.

I should say that I come from a much, much smaller school district elsewhere on the East Coast, so trying to understand MCPS policies has taken some adjustment. I understand that large school districts face way different challenges. We're mostly happy with our kids' ES, but it is definitely overcrowded and the kids are in portables.

Right. That's part of the sector plan for the area, and all the County government sites have had to relocate to make way for mixed use right next to the Metro. MCPS food distribution center is gone. Fleet is gone. Liquor Control is gone. And now the bus depot has to move. All in the works since 2008.

There may be a better place to put the bus depot. But where, and is it more cost-efficient than Avery Rd.? I don't know.
