No way on PG13 movies. I've seen kids who watch PG13 and R movies and their language is horrid. F___ dropped in front of parents w/o reprisal. Yuck.

I'm the PP whose kid has watched the Hobbit. It was at a friend's house unbeknownst to me.

My DS is 9, and I would never let him watch an R rated movie. I have let him watch *parts* of Transformers, which is PG13, but that's about it as far as PG 13 goes. He has watched all of Star Wars, which I think are all PGs.

DS is 9 and has spatial issues - he can't fold laundry, but can chop vegetables, and cook a few meals under my supervision. Curry is his favorite.
I have always given him leeway for movies and books to suit his interests, and don't care what the official designation is, provided it is a subject he is passionate about. Which means he's watched some World War II movies like the The Longest Day, and read the book as well.
Right now he is vacuuming upstairs with his 4 year old sister.

My 7 year old only
-takes his plate to sink after meal
-puts away clothes after I fold them
-puts clothes in hamper
-very rarely I ask him to clean his toys up, but he does when asked
-can only get ready made snacks from fridge like apple sauce, yogurt, etc.
He does play outside in our yard unsupervised as well as bikes to friends houses on his own.

Sounds average. My kids have to make their beds daily and clean up daily without me having to ask them to do so. Bedtime is the same on weekdays and weekends. There are zero PG 13 movies for a 7 year old. (My 9 year old has zero still. Language in PG can be bad enough).

1) makes sure his coat and backpack and shoes are put in the right place when he comes home.
2) cooks often (with supervision), but he's done some pretty advanced stuff (he enjoys it).
3) sets the table
4) clears his plate
5) helps carry bags in from grocery store
6) cleans up his playroom (toys, not vacuuming or dusting).
7) helps with some yard work like raking leaves and putting down mulch
8) loves to shovel snow.
He's not tall enough to make his bed, which is pushed up against the side of the wall.
I view chores as (1) learning to do housework and other necessary tasks to run a household, and (2) a way to teach teamwork. But I also want to prioritize schoolwork as his major job, so I don't envision him doing as many chores as a child as I did.

I feel better knowing that many of you are watching G and PG movies. We do allow for a few PG13. There are a few kids in his class whose parents let their kids watch R and anything on the tv. the PG13 movies we've let him see we knew what was in it and watched them with him. Thanks for the input.

Most kids movies are PG now a days. Frozen was PG and every little girl I know has seen it. If you stick to G movies there is isn't much for kids to see.

I think your kids sounds pretty responsible.
My 7 year old does make his bed (just quickly pulls the sheet over the top, nothing fancy). But, he's up super early anyway and we have plenty of time in the am.
- Sets the table
- Helps fold clothes (not great, but decent)
- Puts away silverware (not dishes because I'm a little worried he's too clumsy and will break stuff)
- Puts away his laundry and some of ours
I haven't let him make toast yet, but was thinking I should! So, I'm glad to see your post. I might work on that.
And agree, no PG13 movies yet. We still stick with G rated, but DS isn't a huge movie fan.
